Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum EPS pension guaranteed by EPFO? expand_more
EPFO guarantees a minimum monthly pension of ₹1,000 for all EPS pensioners (enhanced from ₹500 in 2014). If your formula-based pension calculates below ₹1,000, EPFO pays ₹1,000. Many long-term low-wage workers benefit from this floor. Note: widow and children's pension have separate minimum amounts.
What is pensionable service under EPS? expand_more
Pensionable service is the total years of EPF membership during which EPS contributions were made. If you changed employers and transferred your EPF balance, the service from all previous employers is added. If you withdrew PF between jobs (which also withdraws the EPS component), the pensionable service from the previous job is lost. Continuous EPF membership (through transfers, not withdrawals) is essential to maximise pensionable service.
What is the higher EPS pension option and who is eligible? expand_more
The Supreme Court in 2022 upheld a Kerala High Court ruling that employees and employers who contributed to EPF on actual basic salary (above the ₹15,000 cap) had the option to also contribute to EPS on actual basic salary. EPFO opened a window for eligible employees to apply for this higher pension option. If approved, the EPS pension is calculated on actual basic salary rather than the ₹15,000 cap, significantly increasing pension amounts for higher salary employees. The application window has closed — check with EPFO for current status.
What is the minimum service required to claim EPS pension? expand_more
Minimum 10 years of pensionable service is required to qualify for monthly pension. If you have less than 10 years of service at retirement or before age 58, you are not entitled to monthly pension — you receive a Scheme Certificate (which can be used if you rejoin employment) or can withdraw the EPS share. After 10 years, the pension is payable for life from age 58 (or age 50 with a reduced rate for early pension).
